Advanced Simulation for a Safe and Sustainable Research Environment

03 February 2026

Technia has supported the European Spallation Source (ESS) in ensuring a robust and future-proof design for one of Europe’s most advanced research facilities. ESS is a collaboration between 13 European countries, focused on neutron-based research that enables the development of sustainable materials, new medical applications, and innovations in energy. These ambitions require buildings with exceptionally high safety standards and long operational lifespans. Critical structures—such as facilities for handling radioactive waste—must meet international regulations and withstand extreme loads.

ESS selected Technia as an independent partner to review and validate key structural designs. Using advanced 3D simulation, Technia analysed and verified central engineering proposals for the facility. By evaluating technical calculations and assessing how the structures may be affected by factors such as material choices, future usage, and different climate scenarios, Technia ensured that the proposed solutions met both international standards and ESS’s own stringent requirements.

Through this assignment, Technia helped reduce the risk of structural issues during both construction and operation. ESS now has validated decision-making support for the facility’s most critical components, strengthening safety, operational reliability, and the long-term conditions required to conduct world-class research in a sustainable way.
